Historical Figures 101: Rosa Parks

HISTORY DETECTIVE: Rosa Parks, I'm not tired

Description: History Detective is a podcast for teachers, students and lovers of history. It delves into stories from the past that don’t always get told in the textbooks.

1. From just this episode, this podcast becomes a 10/10. The setting for this podcast was peaceful where the commentator was professional in their information and displayed their research through their work. Not only was the podcast clear and simple, but a transcript was also on the same page for readers to follow along with the dictator.

2. Rosa Parks is commonly known as the first black woman to refuse to give up their seat for a white citizen during the Civil Rights era of the United States. The creator of this podcast went further beyond and researched events that happened prior to this incident, and sure enough, it opened my eyes to many events that were not known enough

3. It was surprising to me that this podcast revealed so much information about the Rosa Parks era that I did not know before. The Montgomery Bus incident was her second encounter with the law. Her first bus incident almost got her arrested, and after years until the second bus incident, she had met the same bus driver before. A phenomenal coincidence! Rosa Parks was not even the first black woman to be arrested for refusing her bus seat.

4. Claudette Colvin was 15 years of age in 1954, and she was arrested 9 months before Rosa Parks was arrested.

How does this podcast affect my classroom?

1. I can definitely use this podcast as an extra credit opportunity to see if my students want to learn more about the Rosa Parks era. Some people might learn better by just listening to a lesson rather than reading it. Students can be asked about what they learned and how is it important compared to lessons taught in textbooks.

Pros and Cons

Pros: It is free to listen to anywhere and anytime.

Cons: People might use this as background noise instead of actively listening for key points
